The American Dental Association Issues Updated Recommendations for Dental X-rays

With a goal of decreasing patient exposure to radiation and after working with the U.S. food and Drug Administration, the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs recently released an update to its recommendations for dental x-ray use.

The new guidelines titled “Dental Radiograph Examinations: Recommendations for Patient Selection and Limiting Radiation Exposure” are meant to help clinicians gauge when dental x-rays are medically appropriate and outweigh the risks of exposing the patients to radiation. The guidelines are meant to be a recommendation and not to represent the standard of care or be a requirement for dental practices to follow, according to a press release.

Changes from previous ADA radiography recommendations include new guidance on patient shielding, a section on limiting radiation exposure, and new topics including receptor selection, handheld x-ray units, technique charts and radiation risk communication. The recommendations continue the ADA’s support of the principle of ALARA or As Low As Reasonably Achievable, according to the release.

The new recommendations can be found here.
