Long-Term Study Links Vitamin D With 50 Percent Reduction in Dental Caries

A comprehensive review of 60 years of research indicates a connection between Vitamin D and reduced rates of dental caries, according to a study published in the December issue of Nutrition Reviews.

The research by Dr. Philippe Hujoel of the University of Washington looked at 24 controlled clinical trials from the 1920s to the 1980s, encompassing approximately 3,000 children in six countries. The analysis pointed to Vitamin D being related in some way to a 50% reduction in the rate of dental caries.

Previous research on vitamin D’s relationship to dental caries has led to a mix of opinions, and Dr. Hujoel said he does not think his analysis is the definitive statement on the topic, according to a press release. The data used comes from a time period where the subjects lived in a different environment than children today, but Dr. Hujoel said the data still indicates pregnant women and young children should be receiving sufficient vitamin D because it does lead to better mineralized teeth and bones.
