American Dental Association Announces Support for American Public Health Association’s Policy Statement Affirming Dental Amalgam as Safe and Effective

The American Dental Association is standing alongside the American Public Health Association in support of the APHA’s recent policy paper affirming the safety and efficacy of dental amalgam for use as a treatment for dental cavities, according to a press release from the ADA.

The APHA policy, which was made official on Oct. 30, backs amalgam use based on APHA findings that amalgam’s contribution to environmental mercury contamination is minimal, and the belief that limiting availability of amalgam would have negative health consequences, which would be felt most acutely in low income areas.

The ADA statement of support also backs the APHA recommendation that dental schools continue to train future generations of dentists on proper handling or dental amalgam. Additionally, the ADA stresses that local regulatory agencies should work with clinicians to create best practices for handling disposal of amalgam, including the use of amalgam separators in clinical settings.

The ADA statement concludes by noting the ADA’s belief that the best way to reduce use of dental amalgam is to promote preventive efforts to stop dental disease before cavities that require a filling are created. Strategies such as community water fluoridation, use of dental sealants and improved educational efforts are recommended.
