Lava Crown Case Study

Here's a pictorial of a case where I replaced a failing amalgam on tooth No.30 with a full-contour zirconia crown designed and milled in the dental laboratory with the 3M ESPE Lava CAD/CAM system.

The patient presented with a failing amalgam on tooth No. 30. The site was isolated with rubber dam.

Amalgam was removed and caries detection dye was used to check for any remaining decay.

After placing a glass-ionomer core buildup for reinforcement, double retraction cord was placed.

The site was lightly dusted with titanium dioxide powder to facilitate scanning the preparation and adjacent teeth with the Lava C.O.S. scanner.

The top cord was removed and the digital impression was taken.

The margin was reviewed in the standard view…

…and the 3-D view.

The restoration was designed in the lab on the 3-D virtual model. Here is the operative quadrant, where the well-defined margin is visible.

The virtual model of the opposing arch…

….is articulated to ensure proper occlusion.

The provisional is placed.

The final restoration fits perfectly with no chairside adjustment necessary.
