The holiday season always starts off with a burst for the dental industry as the Greater New York Dental Meeting crashes the Thanksgiving—and this year the Hanukkah—party. But with an exhibit hall full of exciting innovations and a full slate of speakers and continuing education, the event proved to be a great use of a few days in early December.

With the exhibit hall opening to visitors on a Sunday, the first day of the show was crowded and busy, and while things slowed down a little bit over the next few days, there was no shortage of exciting new dental products to see firsthand and close to 55,000 attendees took advantage of the opportunity.

With the GNYDM taking place exactly a month after the American Dental Association meeting, plenty of products debuting in New Orleans were still exciting draws around the exhibit hall. DENTSPLY Caulk’s innovative Aquasil Ultra Cordless tissue managing impression system remains an exciting new impression option while Isolite System’s Isovac is another innovation with the potential to add efficiency and patient comfort to a practice.

Carestream Dental’s new chairside CAD/CAM system CS Solutions was also a draw, but with the GNYDM launch of BIOLASE’s new Galaxy BioMill CAD/CAM system, it only had a one month reign as the newest chairside system around. The new open architecture system from BIOLASE features the 3Shape TRIOS digital impression system and pairs it with a powerful mill capable of both wet and dry production allowing it to work with an impressive range of CAD/CAM materials including Ivoclar Vivadent’s IPS e.max lithium disilicate as well as zirconia and other full contour materials.

Another exciting technology innovation making its presence felt in New York was the Solea CO2 laser from Convergent Dental. The first CO2 dental laser approved for hard and soft tissue applications, Solea cuts at a 9.3 µm wavelength which actually vaporizes enamel, which means faster and more accurate hard tissue cutting. On top of the effective laser technology, the system is comfortable to use with computer aided preparation and familiar foot pedal control.

Another exciting addition to the 2013 GNYDM was the ColLABoration show within in a show featuring companies and products aimed at the dental lab market. The chance to see lab materials, CAD/CAM systems, 3D printers and more was something dentists don’t get to do every day, and as digital technology continues to expand, the lines between chairside and lab technologies will continue to blur. A good case in pint was the impressive new DWX-4 mill from Roland which is now approved for use with 3M ESPE’s Lava Ultimate material, and at a price less than $18,000 could be a compelling chairside milling option for an open architecture CAD/CAM set up.

News at the GNYDM didn’t only happen on the show floor. DEXIS invited the media to a nearby photo studio to show off its forthcoming software offerings. Coming later this month is the DEXIS photo iPhone app for capturing extraoral images which are instantly and wirelessly added to the DEXIS Imaging Suite. That powerful imaging software platform will have a cousin next year as the company is readying the launch of DEXIS max, a native imaging application for Apple computers.

Henry Schein hosted some of its customers and the dental media for an evening forum on the industry’s digital future. A quintet of speakers including Chairman Stanley Bergman, VP of Global Prosthetic Solutions Dr. Robert Gottlander, dental educator Dr. Marcus Abboud, dental lab owner David Lampert and dental technology enthusiast Dr. William Busch all spoke about the industry’s move to digital technologies, the benefits of open architecture systems and the numerous ways these systems can improve practice and lab efficiency and the patient experience.
