Thursday, January 3, 2013

Product innovations continued to hit the dental industry at a rapid pace in 2012. New technologies and novel materials were introduced on a regular basis, while time-tested products continued to be vital parts of many dental practices.

While the individual products that drew people’s interest can be important, this look at the most popular product categories really says a lot about what types of products are vital to the everyday operations of a dental practice and which new categories are changing the way we diagnose and treat our patients.

Here are the 12 Most Visited Dental Product Categories of 2012:

2012 was perhaps the biggest year for new lights on the market, especially the LED variety. These newer lights are packed with features never before thought of in a traditional operatory light.

The deadline for electronic charting is approaching next year. Thankfully, most of the practice management software companies have your paperless solutions ready to go.

10. Ceramic Ovens

In-office CAD/CAM is growing, and thus practices need the oven required to process the materials used in these digital systems. While large labs are expanding their operations, more general dentists are finding use for ceramic ovens in their own in-house labs as well.

9. Dental Chair and Operatory Packages

It may finally be time to switch out that old orange-colored dental chair for something new. Newer chairs not only provide better patient support, but they allow for improved operator ergonomics as well, so it’s better for everyone.

8. Ultrasonic Scalers

This year dentistry saw a huge amount of media attention over the link between periodontal disease and systemic cardiovascular disease. The ultrasonic scaler continues to be an excellent tool for oral hygiene.

4. Autoclaves/Sterilizers

Your dental sterilizer may be the most underappreciated piece of equipment in your office, and yet one of the most important. Newer autoclaves are more independent and sport fully automated features.
