Dentalcompare Blog: Why Good Oral Health is a Prerequisite for Astronauts

As a dental practitioner, my job not only includes fixing teeth, but educating patients in how to care for their teeth. It often involves dispelling rumors about what works, and what doesn't. I always get a kick out of chatting with kids about their own hygiene, and what those scary "sugar bugs" will do to teeth. Their responses are always sweet, and often humorous.

I came across a video on Space.com that highlights some pretty humorous perceptions on dental hygiene. The European Space Agency took to the streets to ask people why it is important for astronauts to have clean teeth. They spend up to six months of time on the International Space Station, and as they say in the video, there has not yet been a dentist on board for checkups. I have to admit, I had no idea what the astronauts actually ate in space, but it all looked pretty good.
